Social worker jobs can have much variety

Social work jobs come in all shapes and sorts. Obviously there are many similarities between them, since they are all in the caring field, but some social services jobs will require different skills to others. If you are considering a career in social worker jobs, it’s always a useful idea to look around and see what there is out there before applying and training. That way, you can get some experience under your belt as well as learning a bit more about the kinds of jobs you might enjoy doing, and those that just aren’t for you.

You can begin by volunteering – it doesn’t have to be for an extensive period of time, or a significant weekly commitment. Just an afternoon or the odd hour here and there should give you a sense of what’s involved. Obviously, this is very important, since there is a great difference between, say, looking after disabled teenagers and taking care of elderly people. Whatever the similarities, you’ll probably gravitate naturally more towards one of these than the other; for many people, one might throw them into terror, whilst the other sounds interesting and worth pursuing.

There’s some good news despite all the gloom of cuts at the moment, which is that the UK’s population distribution is changing. We are getting older – or more precisely, more of the population is going to be old at any set time. This is a result of the ‘baby boomer’ generation retiring, and over the next 20 years or so we are set to see a huge increase in the number of over-65s. Whilst this may place considerable weight on resources, they will still need caring for, and so it seems likely that there will be increases in recruitment numbers for certain areas of social services, at least.

Another thing to consider is not what is going to happen in the long term around the country, but what is going on near you now. There will likely be various different organisations and institutions in your immediate area that you could end up working at if you pursue social services jobs. The needs of different areas vary though, and so it might be an idea to look further from home. If you are prepared to live elsewhere, then you will be able to apply for many more social work jobs in your sector. There are dedicated websites that collect and advertise social worker jobs, and checking these from time to time, or registering for news updates, will keep you posted on the sorts of vacancies there are available.

School clothes shopping made painless

School uniforms have a lot to be said for them. They are a reliable leveller in terms of status (in that kids of better-off families dress just the same as children from less well off parents), and they give a degree of conformity to a school, which helps to reinforce the identity of the pupils as members of the school. Wearing specific school clothes, rather than adopting a looser dress code, also means that there is a base level of smartness expected. However, there is a downside to uniforms, and that is cost and hassle when it comes to acquiring them. A London schoolwear supplier that sells merchandise online can therefore make a great difference when it comes to that time of year again – or more regularly, if your children are growing fast.

Kids are normally happy to go out and buy clothes, so long as they are clothes they want to wear. The difficulty is that school clothes aren’t very exciting, and there’s no motivation to get the job done. This inevitably means that it gets left to the last point possible, and then there’s a mad rush as the family runs around the high street, trying to get all the new clothes you need before the new term begins. Worse, it’s not just your family, so the relevant shops are full with (usually) mothers and their children, all searching for clothes that no one really wants to spend any time chasing after. It’s the normal end-of-holiday nightmare, that looming drag that comes after weeks of rest and recreation (or, alternatively, the crowning misery after weeks of having the house overrun by noisy kids).

The online London schoolwear supplier can bypass many of the problems that come with buying school clothes by the traditional routes. So long as you have the relevant measurements (which you can even find by reading the labels on those clothes you know do fit well), you can order all the school uniforms you need over the internet, without even setting foot in the crowded shops of the high street. Of course, there are some bits you may need to buy in person; some people are wary about buying shoes online, for example, although if you’re confident enough about what you want then these are also available over the internet. But that’s just one trip, rather than a day – or days – of traipsing around the shops, wishing you hadn’t put it off for quite so long this time.

Why consider invoice processing?

For many, paperwork has become the bane of the modern office environment.  Accounts Payable departments often spend far too much time sorting through piles of documents and inputting data onto computers.  If your organisation could use more efficiency in its document management, it may be that Bottomline technologies could provide just the solution for you.  By automating your company’s invoice processing and document processing operations, they can solve important business problems with the use of complex yet easy-to-use technology.

Document process automation combines software with your own current document processes and systems. Basically, manual document processes such as traditional invoice processing and outbound document generation are now outdated.  By streamlining and automating these processes, you can introduce more efficient and effective operations across your company.  The use of this streamlining technology need not be expensive or time consuming, and it can be shaped to your company’s needs.

Many companies have large Accounts Payable departments who devote large amounts of time to invoice processing, which tends to be a time-consuming and error-prone process, irrespective of the talent of the department in question.  Automating this process can eliminate paper processing, help validate invoices and allow Accounts Payable departments to focus on resolving issues with invoices rather than manual data entry.  This is achieved by scanning and capturing invoice data, and validating captured information.  With this done, your Finance Department can move quickly straight from invoice receipt to invoice payment with a lesser level of manual intervention.  This automation makes invoices ready to pay faster than if they are processed by the usual paper methods, so it is possible to start getting supplier discounts for early payment – thus saving more money.

In this modern age, where more and more processes are done digitally, some managers might be worried about removing the human element from important operations.  Certainly, it is worth exercising some caution with regard to which elements of your business you decide to automate.  However, it is surely clear that where document management is concerned, manual labour is generally a waste of important resources.  If document processing and invoice processing can be digitised, your skilled staff can devote their precious time to more important tasks like customer service.  This should leave you with customers who are happier with the service they receive, employees who are more satisfied, and less burdened with dull tasks,  and major savings on your balance sheet.

The importance of the phono amp

Connecting amplifiers to a turntable and an audio system should be hassle free, but we are all familiar with that painful moment when we think it is all sorted, but the sound just will not come out of the amp at the required volume.  The reason for this might be that most of today’s amplifiers do not feature an input socket market turntable, so they cannot be connected without a phono preamp.  This is basically an electronic circuit or stage that deals with the correct amplification of the phono cartridge and sends it to the amp or audio system. It is also often referred to as a phono stage or a phono amp, but these all mean the same thing.

Beneath all these technical terms is a simple box that connects between a turntable and an amplifier.  In order to decide which one to purchase and what sort of price to go for, an appreciation of how the phono amp works may be of some use.  When vinyl records were the norm, integrated amplifiers featured an input for the record player or turntable as standard, but this began to cease when analogue sources started to become digital in origin.  As digital sources have similar voltages, a preamp-stage was often no longer needed, as a simple switch that selects between inputs was all that was needed.  For this reason, the ‘passive preamp’ was created, but rather than containing an actual preamp, these boxes just house switches and relays.

For those who need an actual preamp, it is just a matter of obtaining a phono stage, hooking up the turntable to it, and hooking up the output from the preamp to your amplifier.  The sound you will get will be dependent on a few factors, and the prices vary significantly.  A very cheap preamp is usually unlikely to provide you with very good quality audio, but equally, some budget preamps are dressed up as very high quality ones. The best option for novices is to go for a medium priced one, which will at least ensure that you are not severely overcharged for an inferior product.

It is important, therefore, not to be confused by the technicalities.  The phono stage, the phono preamp and the phono amp all have the same function, that of connecting your amp to your turntable.  With this technology in place, you should be able to play all your favourite tunes with perfect sound and absolutely no stress.  As long as all your other equipment works, that is!

Powerpoint design that puts you ahead of the rest

It has many times been said that Powerpoint is the most abused PC application of all time. We have all had the experience of watching bad Powerpoint presentations and feeling pretty abused ourselves! Sales presentations which insult our intelligence or which try to disguise a lack of clear thought with nifty powerpoint design are just plain irritating. We’ve all been on the wrong end of inadequate presentations so why do so many of us still get Powerpoint so wrong?

One of the problems is that the Powerpoint software itself is not difficult to figure out, even without any training, and it’s very tempting, especially if we find our own content uninspiring after over-exposure to it, to play about with fun graphics and special effects. Suddenly you realise you’ve wasted hours of time that could have been spent on clarifying the message behind the presentation.

The other key pitfall is to start crafting your presentation with the Powerpoint software already open. Powerpoint does not however do the thinking for you! Many messages that need to be delivered are not entirely linear or are not easily divided down into neat bullet points. Far more profitable to spend some time, either with old-fashioned pen and paper or with another application working out what exactly it is you need to communicate. If you need a deadline in order to perform then leave the Powerpoint till later in the process so that you are less prone to getting distracted with all the bells and whistles!

On the other hand, there are times when you need to create a big impact or convey high-level information, such as for a sales pitch to an important new client, and that’s when it may make sense to bring in a specialist. The advantage of calling in outside help is that your message is not familiar to them so they will be excellent judges as to whether your overall presentation is clear to an outside audience or not. A good company can offer a bespoke service, giving advice on every stage of the process from honing the central message to creating slides that add to rather than detract from your message. Some can also coach you on your presentation style, giving you the confidence to really shine at your next pitch.

Excellent Powerpoint presentations ultimately depend on making a connection with people. Ultimately, giving sales presentations still involves public speaking which is, for most of us, a learned skill. It’s easy to endeavour to deflect attention with the powerpoint design but it’s an approach that can backfire spectacularly in terms of ultimate impact. If your next presentation is a major one, could it be time to call in the experts?
